CFA Strongly Supports Proposed Safety Rules for Button Batteries in Canada

The Consumer Federation of America, along with a coalition of leading consumer safety and public interest organizations, has submitted a letter in support of Health Canada’s proposed determination that products containing button or coin batteries, and the packaging of these batteries, pose a danger to human health or safety under the Canada Consumer Product Safety Act (CCPSA). Drawing on Canadian and U.S. injury and fatality data, the groups call for comprehensive, enforceable requirements comparable to U.S. standards under Reese’s Law. The letter emphasizes that young children are especially at risk and urges Health Canada to adopt stronger safeguards, particularly for children’s toys, along with clear warning labels, a prompt compliance timeline, and a public education campaign to prevent further injuries and deaths.
