New York Attorney General Letitia James has introduced a bill to strengthen New York’s ability to shield consumers and small businesses from unfair and abusive conduct.
March 13, 2025 | WASHINGTON, D.C. — Yesterday, New York Attorney General James advanced new legislation—the “Fostering Affordability and Integrity through Reasonable (FAIR) business practices act”— that would enhance the ability of individuals, small businesses and the Attorney General’s office to hold bad actors accountable when consumers and small businesses are ripped off by bad actors. This legislation would add long overdue provisions to New York’s consumer protection law that provide authority to prosecute unfair and abusive practices, in addition to existing authority to pursue practices which are deceptive.
“CFA is delighted to see Attorney General James introduce this bill to greatly improve its outdated consumer protection statute, especially at a time when states are rapidly becoming the primary bulwark against corporate scofflaws and cheats,” said Erin Witte, director of consumer protection at Consumer Federation of America. “As a federation of nearly 200 state and local consumer organizations, we fully support efforts to amplify the ability of states to protect their constituents from exploitative practices and harmful conduct that they are not equipped or able to avoid.”
