Consumer Federation of America’s “National Food Policy Conference” Kicks Off in DC

WASHINGTON – Today, the Consumer Federation of America begins its 48th annual two-day National Food Policy Conference (NFPC) at the Grand Hyatt Hotel in DC. The event will bring together policymakers, advocates, health professionals, food industry representatives, and academic researchers specializing in agriculture, food safety, and nutrition policy.

With food policy and the “Make America Healthy Again” movement commanding significant attention in the recent election, this year’s conference will take a look at the current Trump Administration’s record so far, and what may lie head for the food system. Experts will discuss topics including ultra-processed foods, managing zoonotic disease risk such as the ongoing avian influenza outbreak, the impacts of recent tariff hikes on farmers and food prices, conflicts of interest in nutrition research, regulating food additives, and universal free school meals.

“There is a lot of noise out there about what we need to do to fix the food system, and the National Food Policy Conference provides a platform to get together, hash it out, and really understand the issues,” said Thomas Gremillion, Director of Food Policy at the Consumer Federation of America. “It’s a place for rigorous debate, insightful discussions, and collaborative learning where food policy leaders can test their ideas about how to create a safer, more affordable, just, and sustainable food system.”

This year’s featured speakers will include U.S. Rep. Sanford Bishop (GA), Ranking Member of the House Appropriations Subcommittee on Agriculture; Dr. Kevin Hall, a National Institutes of Health researcher and renowned authority on ultra-processed foods and metabolism; and Dr. Dariush Mozaffarian, Director of the “Food is Medicine” Institute at the Friedman School of Nutrition Science and Policy at Tufts University.
