CFA has joined with other consumer advocates, proponents of sustainable agriculture, and food companies in submitting the following comments to the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) asking for a meaningful disclosure standard for foods that contain ingredients derived from genetically engineered crops. Last summer, Congress passed the National Bioengineered Food Disclosure Standard, which preempted a Vermont GMO labeling law that was about to go into effect, and instead requires USDA to establish a mandatory, national disclosure standard for GMO foods by July 28, 2018. CFA and its allies call on USDA to issue a standard that is based on Congress’ clear intent to cover all GMO foods and GMO technologies, is consistent with international standards and is inclusive of all Americans –including consumers without smartphones, rural residents and the elderly.
