CFA Urges the Department of Commerce to Promote Pro-Consumer Policies in Advancing the Internet of Things

From the consumer perspective, the Internet of Things can add value to products and services and empower consumers, but it must be developed with privacy and security built in, with transparency about how it works, with respect for consumers’ digital rights, with consumer choice, and with fair and effective means of redress for problems that consumers may encounter. The Department of Commerce should continue its work on standards for security and interoperability, support legislation to provide individuals with strong, enforceable privacy and security rights, and use its relationship with the business community to promote policies and practices to ensure that consumers can fully benefit from the opportunities that connectivity offers.
