CFA Statement on FTC Lawsuit Against WPATH

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Today, the Federal Trade Commission filed a lawsuit against a professional organization of health care providers, aimed at shutting down access to health care for transsexual, transgender, and gender-nonconforming individuals and their parents. 

The Consumer Federation of America's Director of Competition and Market Fairness, Emily Peterson-Cassin, made the following statement: 

“The Federal Trade Commission can be a powerful fighter against high prices and increasing costs on Americans. They could be fighting junk fees across the economybanning surveillance pricinglitigating against companies that rip us off and shutting down mergers that raise our prices.  

Instead, the agency has chosen to fight a baseless culture war while ignoring the affordability crisis we all face. At a time when families are struggling with the rising cost of living, anyone concerned about lowering costs and ensuring access to evidence-based health care should question whether this is the best use of public time and resources.”
