USDA Urged to Stop Misleading Nitrate Labeling on Processed Meat

CFA TC

Washington, D.C. –Consumer Federation of America and its allies submitted the following letter asking the U.S. Department of Agriculture to prevent the use of “No Nitrate or Nitrite Added” and “Uncured” labeling claims on processed meats. The claims are misleading because the overall health risks of products with the claims are no different from other processed meats. The letter expresses support for a petition submitted earlier this year by Center for Science in the Public Interest and Consumer Reports.
