Consumer Groups Commend U.S. Consumer Product Safety Chairman Inez Tenenbaum for her Leadership & Service

Washington, D.C. — Consumer Federation of America, Consumers Union, Kids In Danger, US Public Interest Research Group and Public Citizen offer the following statement upon the departure of Chairman Inez Tenenbaum from the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission:

Our organizations thank Chairman Tenenbaum for her leadership at the Consumer Product Safety Commission since 2010. At her confirmation hearing Chairman Tenenbaum said, "if confirmed as the new chairman, I will reassure America's families that their government can and will protect them from unknown or unforeseen dangers in the products they use.”  Her leadership through the implementation of the Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act of 2008, especially the durable infant and toddler standards known as “Danny’s Law” and the consumer incident reporting database, SaferProducts.gov has done just that.   We appreciate Chairman Tenenbaum’s focus on children’s safety and her willingness to provide open and responsive leadership.  We wish her all the best in her future endeavors.

The groups also commend Commissioner Robert Adler for assuming the critical role of acting chair.  Commissioner Adler continues to be a strong voice for consumers at the agency.  We look forward to working with him and the other two Commissioners on CPSIA implementation and other vital safety issues.  We hope the White House moves expeditiously to name a strong replacement for Chairman Tenenbaum.
