CFA Supports Efforts By Senator Blumenthal to Protect Connecticut Consumers from Flooded Vehicles

Wethersfield, CT – Today, the Consumer Federation of America (CFA) expressed support for the efforts of Senator Richard Blumenthal (D-CT) to protect Connecticut consumers from unsafe and problematic flooded vehicles resulting from Hurricanes Harvey and Irma.

“Senator Blumenthal’s efforts are particularly important due to the recent flooding hundreds of thousands of Texas and Florida vehicles, many of which may show up in Connecticut” said Jack Gillis, CFA’s Director of Public Affairs and author of The Car Book.  “While, hopefully, these vehicles will have their titles marked “flood damaged” and go to salvage yards, many will likely re-enter the market and be sold up north as used cars,” said Gillis.

“Because of the computerization, electronics and sophisticated safety technology in today’s vehicles, Senator Blumenthal’s concern is on target.  An unwitting consumer who ends up with a flood vehicle will not only be stuck with a lemon, but a potential safety hazard.  Looks can be deceiving; with a nice clean up, these water infested vehicles, may actually look pretty good, which is why Senator Blumenthal’s efforts are so important. When it comes to buying a car, three out of four Connecticut consumers buy used, so there’s a big incentive for disreputable sellers to move flood damaged vehicles north, hoping to sell them to unsuspecting buyers,” added Gillis.
