2018 ANNUAL REPORT 15 2018 ANNUAL REPORT CONFERENCES Consumer Assembly: One of the most important gatherings of consumer advocates and public policymakers is CFA’s annual Consumer Assembly in May. In its 52nd year, it was attended by 200 persons, who heard speakers – including Congressman Jamie Raskin, Attorney General Lisa Madigan, Scholar and Author Norm Ornstein, CPSC Acting Chairman Ann Marie Buerkle, and Pew Research Center Senior Survey Advisor Scott Keeter – address issues related to current and emerging consumer trends and policy issues. During this week, representatives from member groups conducted the business of the Federation. Members of 14 policy subcommittees met to review past policies and recommend new ones. These recommendations were submitted to and voted on at the Annual Meeting, where Board members were also elected. National Food Policy Conference: In March, 329 attendees heard speakers – including Acting Deputy Under Secretary of USDA Food Safety Carmen Rottenberg, Aspen Institute Congressional Program Executive Director Dan Glickman, FDA Commissioner Scott Gottlieb, and Tufts University Dean of the School of Nutrition Science and Policy Dariush Mozaffarian – address the 41st annual National Food Policy Conference. Financial Services Conference: In November, 261 persons heard speakers – including Congressman Gregory Meeks, former Secretary of Education Arne Duncan, former CFPB Private Education Loan Ombudsman Seth Frotman, Founding Principal of Gupta Wessler PLLC Deepak Gupta, former CFTC Commissioner Gary Gensler, and Congressman Al Green – discuss banking, housing, investment, and insurance issues at CFA’s 31st annual Financial Services Conference. Awards Dinner: In June, 361 persons attended CFA’s 48th annual Awards dinner in celebration of CFA’s 50th Anniversary. LeadingAge President & CEO and CFA Vice President Katie Smith Sloan, MASSPIRG Executive Director and CFA Vice President Janet Domenitz, Senator Ed Markey, Maryland Consumer Rights Coalition Executive Director and CFA President Marceline White, Consumer Reports President and CEO Marta Tellado, CUNA Mutual Consultant and CFA Secretary/Treasurer Larry Blanchard, CFA Director of Investor Protection Barbara Roper, CFA Executive Director Steve Brobeck, and incoming CFA Executive Director Jack Gillis all addressed the dinner guests. Guests also viewed a video commemorating CFA’s 50 years of consumer research, education, and advocacy.
