Consumer Advocates, Unions, Nonprofits Urge Appointment of Pro-Consumer Insurance Commissioner

CFA TC

In a letter to Maryland Governor Wes Moore, thirteen consumer advocates, unions, and nonprofits urged him to appoint a pro-consumer Insurance Commissioner. The organizations wrote that "The appointment of an Insurance Commissioner provides an excellent opportunity to demonstrate your commitment to leave no one behind...A pro-consumer Insurance Commissioner should work to reduce insurance costs, stop unfair discrimination, and make sure that insurance is available and affordable for everyone."

The Insurance Commissioner oversees Maryland’s auto, homeowners, life, and health insurance market. This includes rate-setting and pricing, claims handling practices, consumer complaints, and other aspects of an industry that charges Maryland consumers and businesses about $40 billion in premium each year. Reducing insurance costs and eliminating harmful discrimination will require substantial structural reforms and a Commissioner committed to seeing them through.

The organizations that signed on are: Economic Action Maryland, the Consumer Federation of America, No Boundaries Coalition of Central West Baltimore, CASA, the Public Justice Center, Council 3 AFSCME Maryland, the Maryland Center on Economic Policy, Cash Campaign of Maryland, Amalgamated Transit Union Local 69, NAACP Maryland State Conference, Progressive Maryland, and 1199 SEIU United Healthcare Workers East.
