We are concerned that in the last quarter of 2017, there were no civil penalties3 and that in FY 2018, there was one civil penalty assessed. This is a stark decrease from previous years. While the penalty was the highest amount assessed by the CPSC, we are concerned that other violators of CPSC’s rules and laws are not being held accountable. The CPSC must use its new authority to apply higher penalties for violations. The higher fines will increase the incentive to report potential product hazards in a timely manner and encourage compliance with consumer product safety laws and regulations as well. 3 See https://www.stericycleexpertsolutions.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/02/ExpertSolutions-RecallIndex- Q42017.pdf
